How To Dress for a Gala

How To Dress for a Gala

If you have tickets to a gala event, then you know its time to bring out the long gowns and couture dresses. Gala events are strictly formal, which means its a black tie and tux for men, and long gowns for women. If this is your first gala and youre not sure how to dress for the evening, here are some tips to keep in mind.

Err on the side of being formal. If youre not sure what to wear, its better to be slightly overdressed than to be underdressed. As a safe bet, opt for a long formal evening gown instead of a little black cocktail dress that ends above the knees. If youre not sure what that means, look at how the ladies dress up during the Oscars. That should give you an excellent idea on how you should look for your own red carpet event.

Choose your fabric. Go for the most sumptuous of fabrics. Silk, taffeta, velvet and chiffon and excellent fabric choices for your evening gown. Avoid cotton knits, denim and jersey for evening wear. You will only look shabby, regardless of the cut of the attire.

Go for high but comfortable shoes. Dont ruin your gown by wearing chunky and heavy pumps. For evening wear, sexy strappy heels are a must. Most gala events start off with a dinner and end with some dancing, so be sure you can tolerate wearing your high heels for the duration of the evening. Theres no point in wearing your sexiest and most expensive shoes if your feet will be killing you for the rest of the night. To make even the most unforgiving shoe styles more tolerable, try using petal inserts. These are cushioned foot pads that support the ball of the feet that you can easily stick on your favorite strappy pair.

Complete with accessories. The right jewelry can make or break an outfit. If your evening gown is on the conservative and simple end, go ahead and glam it up with chandelier earrings or a dramatic neckpiece. If you dont have the real thing, make sure your faux jewelry is well made. Have only one dramatic piece of jewelry, so if you have fabulous earrings, keep your necklace bare or wear a very simple bracelet.

Go glamorous. Its time to get those tresses styled! You may want to pay a professional stylist to do your hair and makeup for the gala. If you have an intricate hairstyle, make sure it will hold up the whole night. Bring focus to your eyes with smokey makeup. You may even want to dab a little bit of shimmering lotion on your bare arms, shoulders and legs to add a little sparkle to your skin.

Dont forget the men. Its easier for men to dress for formal events. Rent a black tux and wear with a white or black bow tie. Never go to a gala without a jacket or suit coat on. Also, make sure your leather shoes and shined properly. Theres no room for scuffed shoes at these events.

How To Calm Hyperactive Children

As a doctor who treats ADD/ADHD, I am often asked about ways to calm hyperactive children. Eat fresh foods, fruits, and vegetables. Choose foods that have not been sprayed with harmful pesticides, or pumped with growth hormones, steroids, and antibiotics.

Eliminate foods and drinks that contain added preservatives, coloring and sugar. How Gold is Made into Jewelry

How Gold is Made into Jewelry

The gold used in jewelry contains alloys. Various karat weights, including 10k, 14k, 18k and 22k, contain part zinc, copper, silver, or palladium. 18K gold is 750 percent pure, with 250 alloys added. Professional jewelers can always tell real gold from fools gold, or fake gold. They have special ways of testing the gold, from adding chemical agents to gauge a reaction, to other special tests. Most jewelers will melt their own scrap gold, or process gold bullion into jewelry. Store bought gold is always strengthened with other metal alloys, which depending on the amount added, determines the carat weight and purity of the gold. Pure gold is 24 carat or 24k, and is alloyed with other base metals, to enable melting and pliability for making the gold into jewelry.

Gold is a profitable metal for jewelers to use for resale, because as little as an ounce of gold can be stretched and made pliable to make multiple necklaces. Gold is melted down with the use of a hand held blow torch, or kiln type oven, and once pliable, put into a special necklace mold, where it hardens.

People dont have to be a professional to make their own gold jewelry, though adding other metals to give the jewelry various colors may be tricky. Copper gives gold a reddish color; palladium or nickel gives white gold its color. To make homemade jewelry, the easiest thing to do is collect scrap pieces of broken gold jewelry. The jewelry can be melted in a safe place away from flammables, with the use of a hand held, low oxygen torch. The gold is then melted by bringing the torch flame back and forth quickly over a melting container made for holding liquid gold. Once the gold is melted, it can then be poured into a mold. Once the gold is hardened into solid form, the jewelry is removed from the mold, and then scraped and polished.

If making your own gold jewelry, it is a good idea to first study the technique, and take a class on how to do this taught by a professional. Always wear safety goggles, and never handle a torch if you dont know how to use it properly. Read books on how to make gold jewelry, and look online at various websites, such as Youtube, which instruct beginning jewelry makers on the art of the craft. If you have no gold scrap jewelry, old gold coins can be melted or anything else, as long as the chemical composition of the gold is pliable enough to be melted. A kiln oven may be required for big chucks of gold, and should be melted by a professional if the gold needs chemical treatment as it is being melted. Check out my blog for links to my boo. Gold Demand Surges In Q As Prices Rise

Gold Demand Surges In Q2 As Prices Rise

China and India continue to pace buying to near record levels.

Gold saw demand soar to its second highest quarterly level in the second quarter, as China and India led purchases totaling $45.5 billion for the three months, according to the World Gold Council.

The Gold Demand Trends report for Q2 2011 showed gold hit $1,552.50 per oz and averaged $1,506.10 during the quarter a 26% increase year on year and 19% up from the first quarter of 2011. These high prices boosted the dollar demand numbers for gold to its second highest quarter in history $44.5 billion, right behind Q4 2010.

For gold bulls, the good news is that this demand spike came from the usual suspects, not unknown new entrants. Once again, the countries to watch are India and China, which not only account for 55% of jewelry demand and 52% of bar and coin demand this time around, but are also are the fastest growing markets. The global growth rate for gold demand was 7% between Q2 2010 and Q2 2011 but India saw a 38% growth rate year on year and China clocked in at 25%.

Let take a look at demand sector by sector to see how it breaks down.

Jewelry Demand Forty six percent of total global gold demand was in the form of gold jewelry and the sector saw demand rise 6% year on year to 442.5 tonnes. Only five areas India, China, Hong Kong, Turkey and Vietnam showed increases in demand year on year.

India cornered a full 32% of global jewelry demand, up 17% year on year though the WGC notes that the second quarter of 2010 had weak historical jewelry demand. However, the WGC noted increased Indian buying that began around the Akshaya Tritiya festival in May and that continued beyond the festival buying, suggesting the country appetite for gold jewelry is high even apart from the expected seasonal holidays and festivals.

China usually has a quiet second quarters too, but the country accounted for 102.9 tonnes of gold jewelry 16% more than this time last year. On a dollar basis, the value of gold jewelry consumed in the second quarter rose 40% compared with Q2 2010. Given that the Chinese economy is doing comparatively well, increasing prosperity seems to be driving jewelry demand.

Hong Kong, which the WGC treats as separate from the rest of China, saw jewelry gold demand rise 38% in physical terms, to 6.8 tonnes, primarily from mainland tourists taking advantage of different designs available in Hong Kong, along with tax advantages on purchases.

In Vietnam, gold jewelry demand was primarily fueled by rumors that gold bar production and sale would be banned, resulting in a 6% increase to 3.3 tonnes. Elsewhere around the world, gold jewelry demand was down.

Investment On a year on year basis, investment demand looks dismal down 37%. This decrease is primarily because of the difference in investment in ETFs and similar products.

Q2 2010 was a huge quarter for ETFs and related products, with inflows of 291 tonnes the highest on record. Compared with that, Q2 2011 net inflow of 51.7 tonnes looks anemic. But it is much better than the net outflow of 62 tonnes we saw in the first quarter of this year.

In fact, if you drop the records seen in Q1 09 and Q2 10, the second quarter demand is comfortably above the average of 41.4 tonnes seen between the second quarter of 2008 and the first quarter of this year.

But all was not bad news in the investment sector. Investment in bars and coins the bastion of the truly paranoid gold bug was up 9% year on year for the quarter, to 307.7 tonnes, with the value up 37% to $14.9 billion. What really impressive is the year on year growth rates for certain countries: Turkey saw investment in bars and coins grow 90%, India grew 78% and China had a growth rate of 44%.

Turkey growth rate mainly benefited from weak demand in Q2 2010, though the WGC reports that investors are becoming more aware of wealth preservation attributes, and that small gold bars are becoming increasingly popular.

In India, demand was concentrated around the Akshaya Tritiya festival and was helped by price dips below $1500/oz. The WGC reports that Indian investors continue to expect further price increases as evidenced by increased buying activity on price dips and a relative lack of recycling activity during the quarter.

High inflation and a sluggish domestic stock market in China continue to drive gold investment. The Gold Accumulation Plan continues to grow, with 1.71 million accounts, holding 22 tonnes of gold, as of June 2011.

Technology Demand Demand for gold in technology is always relatively small compared with jewelry and investment demand, and this quarter saw minor changes to that, with demand up just 2% to 117.9 tonnes. The electronics sector accounts for 83.8 tonnes of that demand and is up 4% year on year driven by demand for today modern necessities like smartphones, tablets and e readers. Additionally, the global semiconductor industry is expected to grow 7% in 2011, which means demand in this sector will remain strong.

Something to watch out for the second quarter saw the first commercial production of automotive catalytic converters containing gold rather than platinum or palladium. Demand for these is now small, but it a new, actual functional use for gold that has not existed previously and those don come around very often.

Supply: The Other Side Of The Equation While current gold prices seems to be fairly uncoupled from supply pressures or perhaps the lack of supply pressures it is still prudent to keep an eye on where gold is coming from. The total supply of gold in the second quarter was 1058.7 tonnes, down 4% year on year.

The decrease comes even though mine production is up 7% due to a number of new startups and better output from existing operations. Declining recycling and net buying from central banks was enough to outweigh the increased production.

Recycling has slowed, even though prices have remained high as consumers are acclimating to rising prices and are bullish on price prospects. Why sell grandma ring if you think gold headed to $3,000 an ounce? And if you thought today prices were catastrophic, you would have already gone to the market with your antique bracelets.

Last but not least, it turns out that central banks were net buyers again, removing gold supply from the market by buying 69.4 tonnes the second highest quarter since the official sector began buying again two years ago.

Given what been happening in the world of gold prices, it will be interesting to see what the demand trends look like for Q3 will consumers stop buying jewelry as prices climb?

Fundamental economics would suggest that there must be some point of elasticity in gold. Will there be renewed inflows to ETFs and other products? Will prices at these higher levels push up supply with increased recycling? Tune in next quarter to find out.

Free Silver Jewelry

Free Silver Jewelry

We are taught to always beware of something free. There is always a catch. You get that email about a free iPod, and you end up having to refer one million friends and make a couple hundred dollars in purchases, and then you might get your iPod. So when I saw a website advertising free silver jewelry, I was more than a bit skeptical. I asked her if she tried it and she assured me that she did in fact receive the jewelry and that it was of excellent quality. So Im still waiting for a catch. Did they sell her information? Did she suddenly start receiving a ton of email and snail mail? Surprising, no.

While you do have to pay for shipping, it is a mere $5.99. Not bad for a piece of silver jewelry with genuine or in some cases, simulated gemstones delivered to your door.

I had to try this. Being interested in jewelry and being a bargain hunter, I had to see what I had been missing out on. I ordered one peridot ring and was very impressed with it. I proceeded to order more pieces, expecting something to go wrong. I was shocked at what you could get for only paying shipping. While some department stores have gemstone and silver rings on sale for $10 to $20 frequently, I found that the gemstones in these pieces were of higher quality. Overall, I was extremely impressed.

While it would have been nice to be able to just look through a catalog and order many pieces, I found their format fun and addicting. Only four items are shown on the screen at one time. Every 5 minutes, one item leaves the screen and one new item appears. This gives each item 20 minutes of time to be shown, provided that stock doesnt run out. I quickly began watching this site while doing other things, checking the site every 20 minutes, and in general, becoming addicted to this format. I think it is rather fun and entertaining.

The site claims to be up for the purpose of introducing products to the public. At various time intervals, products change and new products are offered. Once I think I have seen everything, something new always shows up.

The ordering process is very simple. You have the option of paying by Paypal or credit card, which I found very convenient. They will notify you when your jewelry is shipped. You receive great jewelry by mail generally in approximately one week. The jewelry is great and you are hardly paying anything for what you are receiving.

But as with all things, free or otherwise, there are a few downsides. If you do not live in the United States, you will not be able to order free jewelry. You cannot cancel an order, correct a shipping address, or pay by mail. You may also find that you see many rings you would like, but most will not be in your size. This is because each style of ring is only made in one size. Also, if you happen to miss ordering an item because you either just checked the website too late or you did not make up your mind quickly enough, you will have to wait for the item to come back on at a later time. Orders also can not be combined to save on shipping, although, this shouldnt present much of a problem as the shipping is so inexpensive.

Despite the few minor drawbacks, I found this site to provide a fun and enjoyable shopping experience, along with quality products. And the best part, you only pay shipping and handling on anything you want. So start shopping for silver for free! I believe that you too will enjoy this experience.

Published by Valerie Hansen

I enjoy a variety of hobbies from playing the harmonica to creating polymer clay creations. I also volunteer my time with both marine mammals and guinea pigs. I guess you could say I have a very wide varie.

FEMME FATALE

FEMME FATALE

After expending his energies on a pair of generic, effects laden studio thrill rides MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE and MISSION TO MARS and an only slightly more effective suspense thriller SNAKE EYES in recent years, Brian De Palma was long overdue to return to what may be considered his main dialogue with moviegoers: the twisted tales of obsession, deceit and death hes woven so memorably in efforts such as SISTERS, DRESSED TO KILL, BLOW OUT and BODY DOUBLE. The film that brings De Palma back to his storytelling center is FEMME FATALE, a moody, gleefully stylish noir thriller of the type he can craft better than just about any modern director. The result is a flawed, credibility straining piece of big screen eye candy and a hell of a lot of fun.

Model turned X MEN villainess Rebecca Romijn Stamos plays the venomous, wonderfully unpredictable title character, Laure Ash, whose ability to alter her shape in shifting situations puts the mutant Mystique to shame. De Palma personally scripting one of his films for the first time since 1992s RAISING CAIN tells us everything we need to know about his antiheroine in the bravura opening section, which has Laure go from studying Barbara Stanwyck in DOUBLE INDEMNITY to staging a daring jewelry heist at the Cannes International Film Festival to pulling a fast one on her male cohorts, all without once losing her icy blonde cool.

Alas, things dont proceed quite so smoothly for Laure from there on out, and shes soon on the run from said cohorts especially Eriq Ebouaneys fearsome main baddie, who doesnt take kindly to her attempting to make off with the loot. Laure solves this problem the way anyone would: She replaces a suicidal brunette dead ringer for herself also Romijn Stamos whose life happens to intersect with hers at exactly the right moment. Without giving too much away, lets just say that even this neat trick doesnt permanently end her troubles, and her reinvented character eventually faces dangers from multiple fronts, including the threat of exposure posed by a well meaning photographer Antonio Banderas hired to snap a shot of her.

In the end, Fanboys rejoice: Rebecca Romijn Stamos is Brian De Palmas FEMME FATALE.

2002 Warner Bros.

a moviegoer actually attempting to take the films largely nonsensical plot seriously is simply on the wrong track. The only real story logic at work here is De Palmas desire to surprise us with endless head spinning reversals as his protagonist goes from villainess to heroine and back again, from sympathetic victim to coldhearted predator, from an American badly faking a French accent to a convincingly French sounding Frenchwoman faking. well, its all a little bit confusing to get it straight in one viewing.

It all adds up to the juiciest of breakthrough roles for the stunning Romijn Stamos, whose first coup was simply winning such a complex part on the strength of a big screen resume limited to some body painted action work in X MEN and Russian accented biker badassing in the much maligned remake of ROLLERBALL. Her more than respectable work in what amounts to a series of very different character bits suggests Hollywood may have found the Holy Grail at last a supermodel who can carry a lead role! Shes particularly good when bouncing off the ever affable Banderas, whose very secondary co lead is no more than framing material for her all dominating character or characters. And what can possibly be said about the steamy moment when she ravishes Victorias Secret model Rie Rasmussen in a Cannes ladys room as part of the scheme to steal the serpent shaped piece of jewelry that makes up most of the latters costume? Teenage boys of America, start warming up your DVD players.

As usual with De Palma, a visual stylist and technician almost without peer among American directors, FEMME FATALEs main problems are script issues in particular, the sense that this rather slick, superficial film means less and less the further one gets into it. Give the man a script like CARRIE, THE UNTOUCHABLES or CASUALTIES OF WAR, and there simply isnt anybody who can give it more impact on screen. Even his widely thrashed 90s MISSIONs had a couple of brilliant, visual driven sequences each, and the first half hour of SNAKE EYES has to rank among his most impressive tours de force even if the picture fell apart not long after. FEMME FATALE gets further than most of De Palmas recent efforts by avoiding the whole linear storytelling thing altogether for the most part, though the naughty nightmare that results is almost certainly a couple of notches too arty for the mainstream cineplex crowd.

Viewers will certainly be divided about a major last act curveball that changes the meaning of the entire film the reviewer found it to be a cop out your mileage may differ, but darn it if De Palma doesnt save the ending at the very last second with a powerful final shot that manages to fit the fragmented storyline into a strange kind of order. Leave it to Hitchcocks most faithful heir to leave us with a picture of pictures that comments on the essence of picture making. The Master himself would have loved it.

DVD This Week

DVD This Week

Proof, as if any was needed, that direct to video horror producers have no shame is the recent report from CREATURE CORNER of a sequel to the dreadful BLOODY MURDER. That film was an unexpected video hit, probably due to its cover art of a chainsaw wielding maniac so, despite the fact that no one I ever heard of liked the film, a follow up is in the works under the title of BLOODY MURDER 2: CLOSING CAMP. Yep, more campers and counselors whom no one cares about will get skewered in order to launch a new horror franchise, which nobody wants. Now thats genuinely scary.

On a more promising note is the recent announcement that Dimension Home Video will soon start work on MIMIC 3: SENTINEL. The first MIMIC, from BLADE 2s director Guillermo del Toro, is an under appreciated gem and the first sequel was better than average DTV fare, but this latest follow up, soon to start lensing in Romania, has some real potential. Petty whose debut, the little seen SOFT FOR DIGGING, was a rather unique film experience a horror thriller film with almost no dialogue. Pettys story involves a man whose severe health problems keep him in a sealed bubble room in an apartment building, watching, but never participating with his neighbors. But when he notices that his neighbors are disappearing, he comes to realize that the entire neighborhood has been infested with the deadly Judas Bug, the genetically created mutant cockroach blessed with both intelligence and an ability to mimic other life forms.

THIS WEEKS NOTABLE NEW RELEASES

THE ATTIC / CRAWLSPACE IMG2Ris an odd pairing. THE ATTIC is a subtle, if overly slow, tale of a woman who has spent most of her life caring for her semi invalid, and rather abusive, father. Its a drama really, but with a growing undercurrent of horror as audience, and lead character, increasingly suspect the answer to why her one chance at love and happiness didnt come to pass may be hidden in the title location. CRAWLSPACE, on the other hand, is a heavy handed and exploitative tale of a landlord who was once a Nazi true for most of them I think who likes to spy on, and occasionally kill, his lovely female tenants from the title location. Trash, but fun trash, and a great scenery chewing performance from the late Klaus Kinski.

THE BELIEVERS is one of the few films which deal, reasonably accurately, with the religion of Voodoo, specifically the cult known as Santa Ria. Featuring an excellent cast including Martin Sheen, a young Jimmy Smits, Robert Loggia and Harris Yulin, and directed by the talented John Schlesinger, the film is a well paced shocker with some graphic and gruesome moments and an admirable lack of restraint which allows it to, perhaps unpleasantly, surprise the viewer.

CAT PEOPLE is a horror remake which was pretty much spayed by critics when released in 1982 because director Paul Schrader featured nudity, sex and gore instead of the atmospheric subtly of the 1942 original. The same thing happened to JOHN CARPENTERS THE THING but, two decades later, both films were clearly ahead of the their times and deserve praise for being so different from their progenitors instead of unimaginatively imitating them. Natassia Kinski is an unequaled erotic force here and little of the film seems dated. Heres a film deserving of rediscovery and reappraisal.

CROCODILE shouldnt be confused with Tobe Hoopers recent film of the same name. Hoopers film is merely stupid and dull. This incredibly cheesy dud hails from Thailand and features some of the worst special effects since THE MIGHTY GORGA and a plot that makes less sense every minute its unfolding.

DAHMER isnt the exploitative gross out one might expect from a low budget bio of one of the countrys best known serial killer cannibals. Unfortunately, the film also isnt as interesting as, say, HENRY: PORTRAIT OF A SERIAL KILLER, because of its admirable restraint. Well acted and directed, but not all that compelling.

DAN CURTIS MACABRE COLLECTION 4 DVD set is a heck of an opportunity to pick up four above average adaptations of classic horror tales, all produced by Dan Curtis, the man responsible for the DARK SHADOWS TV serial and THE NIGHT STALKER TV movie. THE TURN OF THE SCREW stars Lynn Redgrave and hails from 1974 and takes some considerable liberties with Henry James oft filmed tale of a governess, her wards and a ghostly presence. THE PICTURE OF DORIAN GRAY is a 1973 production featuring a well cast Shane Briant of Hammers CAPTAIN KRONOS: VAMPIRE HUNTER among others in the title role of a handsome, but amoral, man who remains ageless while a painting of him becomes withered and diseased. Also featured, amongst a strong cast, are Nigel Davenport, Charles Aidman and, and from the recent hit THE OTHERS, Finnoula Flannagan. The best of Curtis horror films is 1973s DRACULA, which is one of the more faithful adaptations of Bram Stokers classic, and offers Jack Palance as a menacing, yet sympathetic count. Also on board are Nigel Davenport and Simon Ward. Last, but certainly not least, is the first of Curtis classic story adaptations, THE STRANGE CASE OF DR. JEKYLL AND MR. HYDE. Made in 1968, this is another fairly faithful version of a classic horror tale, again offering an effective Jack Palance in the title role and a fine, largely British cast, including Denholm Elliott. All four titles are also available separately, but when you can pick up this set for under $40.00, why bother?

DARK SHADOWS Set 2 is, since weve been talking about Dan Curtis, the almost legendary TV serial which launched his career. This is the second of MPIs collections from the gothic/horror soap opera and includes forty episodes along with interviews with Curtis and some of the cast members. While incredibly crude many episodes were shot live by todays standards, there is a hardcore fan following for these shows who have remained loyal to it for over thirty years, spawning several movie spin offs, a short lived new series in the 90s and a, rumored, new film version.

DERANGED / MOTEL HELL IMG3Lis another strange double feature from MGM, though both films are well worth seeing. DERANGED is a seriously disturbing but somewhat low key telling of a serial killer loosely based on the infamous Ed Gein, whose real life exploits inspired both PSYCHO and THE TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE. Roberts Blossom is superb as Ezra Cobb and the films advertising tagline, Pretty Sallie Mae died a most unnatural death. But the worst hasnt happened to her yet, is pretty damn accurate. While DERANGED has a bit of a dark sense of humor, MOTEL HELL is out and out black comedy. This is the story of a farmer and his sister who run the title place of lodging actually its Motel Hello, but that pesky letter O light seems to have a short in it and kidnap people in order to turn out their renowned meat products. You owe it to yourself to see this one, if only for the chainsaw duel. And just remember, It takes all kinds of critters to make Farmer Vincents fritters.

EDGE OF SANITY is a very loose interpretation of DR. JEKYLL AND MR. HYDE, and was one of the last films its star, Anthony Perkins, made. Sadly, it was under the direction of Gerard Kikoine, a filmmaker best known for European skin flicks such as TALES OF TIFFANY LUST and HEAVENLY NURSE. The talented Perkins, one of the great cinematic purveyors of neuroses and psychosis, is asked to do little here but overact while Kikoine pours on the blood, nudity, sex and perversity. One can hardly blame Perkins, who was wasting away from AIDS at the time and grabbing any job he could find in order to leave his family as financially secure as possible. But hes not going to benefit from you buying or renting this, so dont join the exploiters of his talent by partaking of this trash. MALENKA is a largely forgotten drive in item from the 60s. Its a vampire tale or is it? which was given this title in order to cash in on the popularity of George Romeros NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD. The film is best remembered, by those old enough to do so, as part of the Living Dead trio of films unrelated to Romeros film, or to each other which played in drive ins well into the 70s. In this one, Anita Ekberg inherits a castle, but when she goes to check it out she learns that she is part of an infamous family of vampires. Its all pretty silly, but its atmospherically directed by Armando de Ossorio, best known for the Spanish produced BLIND DEAD films.

FARSCAPE: Season 2, Vol. 2 IMG4Ris a two disc, four episode set from the deservedly popular Sci Fi Channel series about astronaut John Crichton and his adventures in a distant galaxy on board a living spaceship with a crew of escaped prisoners. The episodes included are The Way We Werent, Picture if You Will, Home on the Remains and Dream a Little, along with deleted scenes, a Farscape dictionary, featurettes on alien encounters and weapons and ships, as well as conceptual artwork, a bio of oh so sexy actress Claudia Black, and character backstory on Blacks Officer Aeryn Sun.

FIANCEE OF DRACULA is a fairly recent 1999 offering from Jean Rollin, whose languid tales of lesbian vampires have earned a strong cult following both here and in Europe. Unfortunately, this isnt one of his best. In fact, he seems to be spoofing his own reputation and style.

THE FOG IMG5Lwas director John Carpenters first film following the amazing success of HALLOWEEN, which for over twenty years was the most profitable independent film ever made. The story, which I personally believe is just a dream in the main characters mind, is simple enough. On the 100th anniversary of the founding of the coastal town of Bodega Bay, a mysterious, glowing fog rolls in, often moving against the wind, and with a seeming purpose of its own the fog brings with it violent deaths and the eventual revelation of a long hidden secret about the towns founding fathers. This DVD special edition includes: theatrical trailers, the Tales from the Mist: Inside The Fog documentary, the Fear on Film: Inside The Fog documentary, storyboard to film comparisons, outtakes, an advertising gallery and liner notes by John Carpenter.

HANNIBAL / SILENCE OF THE LAMBS is a 2 disc set offering the classic first Hannibal Lecter film and the undeservedly popular second film in this odd horror franchise, the third of which will be hitting theaters soon.

HIGH CRIMES IMG6Rwastes a fine cast Ashley Judd, Morgan Freeman, Jim Caviezel, a talented director Carl Franklin and a workable premise by expecting its audience to buy into an illogical and script hole laden story. Judd is a highly successful California attorney who suddenly finds her seemingly perfect life turned upside down when her husband is arrested by the FBI as a South American war criminal. Judd pairs with an alcoholic, but brilliant, lawyer played by Freeman to try and prove her husbands innocence, even though she comes to doubt it herself. All the elements are there, but you wont believe these characters, or the story, for one moment. Its just Hollywood fluff hoping to duplicate the success of the pairing of Freeman and Judd in KISS THE GIRLS, with as little effort as possible.

HOUSE OF CLOCKS is an obscure item from cult favorite director Lucio Fulci. This was one of four films made for Italian TV under the blanket title House of Doom and involves three criminals whose brutal home invasion goes awry in a manner no one could have been prepared for. Sorry, I havent seen this one but Ill try to check it out and get back with you in the future. Which is where each of us will spend, the rest of our lives.

THE INCUBUS is, along with THE ENTITY, the only American made horror film to graphically deal with supernatural sex. While not all that much is shown, this is pretty sleazy stuff, and not particularly scary.

LAST HOUSE ON THE LEFT IMG7Lis the long awaited DVD debut of one of the more infamous films ever to earn a cult following. Directed and produced by the then unknown Wes SCREAM Craven and Sean FRIDAY THE 13TH Cunningham, this is a remarkably brutal retelling of the same story used in Bergmans THE VIRGIN SPRING. In terms of structure and story, this is almost a Greek or Shakespearean tragedy, but in terms of what is depicted on screen, its a still shocking and brutal tale of depravity and revenge. The DVD includes: commentary by director Craven and producer Cunningham, outtakes and dailies with never before seen footage, including the never seen lost murder and the disembowelment scene, along with a making of documentary and a Forbidden Footage featurette exploring the films most shocking scenes.

MASQUE OF THE RED DEATH / THE PREMATURE BURIAL IMG8Ris a double feature DVD of two of the best of Roger Cormans numerous Edgar Allan Poe adaptations. MASQUE. is a visually brilliant telling of the final days of Prince Prospero Vincent Price who sought to escape a plague by locking himself and fellow nobles in his castle to live an existence of constant pleasure while the disease ravages the countryside. BURIAL offers Ray Milland too old for his role as a man obsessed with the fear of being buried alive.

MUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER IMG9Lis yet another, currently unseen, lesbian/horror tale from the folks at Seduction Cinema. If youve seen one of these, youve seen them all.

NEEDFUL THINGS is a well produced, and very well cast, telling of a Stephen King tale of a small town whose inhabitants find their darkest dreams realized by a new shopkeeper Max Von Sydow whose products provide the film with its title. In spite of the cast, this is a familiar story told with little panache by director Fraser son of Chuck Heston.

THE OBLONG BOX / SCREAM AND SCREAM AGAIN is another MGM double feature, both of which were directed by the generally unreliable Gordon Hessler, and also star Vincent Price and Christopher Lee, with the latter also tossing in Peter Cushing for good measure. BOX claims to be a Poe adaptation, but this gory and willfully perverse tale of a man trying to protect his brother, seemingly driven mad, or perhaps possessed, by demons, bears no resemblance to any of the masters work. Slightly better is the latter film which offers Price as a mad scientist, and Lee as a good guy!

QUEEN OF THE DAMNED IMG10Ris likely the worst of the terrible crop of horror films which somehow found theatrical release over the past year. This dull and confusing adaptation of an Anne INTERVIEW WITH THE VAMPIRE Rice bestseller should have gone directly to video. Instead, the tragic death of its star, soulful singer Aaliyah, drove the distributor to try and make a quick buck by releasing it to theaters and stressing her presence in, an admittedly pivotal, secondary role. Its basically an overlong music video with everybody looking damn good, sounding damn silly and acting damn badly.

RESERVOIR DOGS: 10th Anniversary Special Limited Edition IMG11Lis a re release of the film that started it all, Quentin Tarantinos trendsetting tale of a jewelry robbery gone awry and the nameless criminals involved. Brutal, breathtaking and bold, this is one of the quintessential films of the 1990s. Plus, the film is available with five different covers, one for each of the key gang members, so you can get your favorite character on the cover of your DVD. Gory, perverse and frequently hilarious, this is about as good as 80s horror got, and Im including the revered RE ANIMATOR in that assessment. The DVD features: trailers, a commentary track with OBannon and production designer William Stout, a Designing the Dead featurette, conceptual art and TV spots.
